Secondary School Achievers Receive Council Awards

Seven secondary school students have been given a helping hand by the Hurunui District Council to pursue further study.

The seven recipients were presented with awards from the 2018 Secondary School Achievers fund by the Hurunui District Council Mayor, Winton Dalley, at a special ceremony in Greta Valley last night.

The fund was set up in 1992 to financially assist students with further study at either secondary or tertiary level in the following year. The council provides an annual grant of $10.000 and this year, for the first time, Buddle Findlay (HDC Legal Advisors) have provided an additional $1500 sponsorship. The awards acknowledge students hard work and achievements, along with their contribution to their community. The successful applications were selected by an independent assessment panel, and its decisions then recommended to the council by the Public Services Committee.

Mayor Winton Dalley says the Secondary School Achievers Awards are a highlight of the council year.

"Being able to recognise our outstanding students with these awards on behalf of our Hurunui community is a real privilege. It is a delight to see our council contributing to the future of our district by supporting these young achievers on their way to further education."

This year’s awards will be used towards funding the recipients’ studies in fashion, nursing, accounting, electrical engineering, tourism management, applied science, agriculture and outdoor recreation. Recipients will apply the funds towards boarding or tuition fees, travel expenses, purchases of text books and electronic equipment.

Mayor Dalley says it is always a pleasure to shake the hands of the district’s young achievers and present the awards, knowing it will make a valuable contribution to their futures.

“The Hurunui District Council has a proud history of encouraging innovation and excellence in our district’s students. The fact we can contribute financially to the development of our secondary school achievers through further study is very special to me.”

The grants will be distributed to the successful applicants before their studies commence next year.
