A word from the Mayor: Heading towards Level 3
Heading towards level 3 – keep in your Bubble.
At the Hurunui District council Emergency Operations centre the team have been relatively quiet which is heartening to hear, but what this typically means to me is that our community are doing what we do best – taking care of each other. To further extend the support available I have encouraged several community groups to apply for the Ministry of Social Development funding. This grant may be used to support members of our community who may need assistance as a result of Covid-19.
With the anticipation of a shift from level 4, this may mean we are permitted to extend our contacts and to include other family members along with the resumption for some work environments. Schools may be open with limited attendance although this is likely to be offered as a mixed model of classroom and online, I am grateful for the Principals and teachers who continue to inspire learning. Thank you for your innovation and willingness to support the younger members of our district and their learning for the future.
Another group of “unsung heroes” that have emerged during this lockdown period is the local “Posties” delivering mail, medication and groceries for those in need, your services have always been there for us but somewhat taken for granted – but not now nor into the future. Thanks to you all.
One of the most significant observations through this “stay home” phase is the importance of local business to keep our communities functioning through a period when travel is impacted, it has highlighted the need for us all to shop local and ensure our business continue to thrive be there for us.
“Shop local support Hurunui”
With Anzac day fast approaching we know that many New Zealanders have been affected by war or know somebody who has. This year a new threat faces all nations as the impact of coronavirus deepens worldwide. As we all face those challenges, we remember with appreciation those who have served in the name of peace and justice. We all have the responsibility to maintain the values of inclusiveness, kindness and compassion. However, we choose to engage with Anzac Day in 2020 let us honour the legacy of those who have served our nation and continue to be united as a Hurunui District.
“We will remember them”
