We are incredibly lucky with the foodbanks we have here in the Hurunui, with three main foodbanks;
*Living Waters Food Bank in Waikari which serves the west side of Hurunui,
*Amberley Area Foodbank in Amberley and Leithfield
*The Pantry in Waipara which serves the east side of Hurunui.
There are on average more than 50 boxes per week going to families in need from our three foodbanks. All this requires great work from volunteers, week after week.
Our longest serving foodbank is The Pantry in Waipara which started in 1997. The foodbanks are backed by various local organisations and supermarkets.
Covid-19 has had a huge effect not only on the demand for the service but also has created fluctuations in the food availability.
‘Cans for a Cause’ is an initiative by Bayleys Real Estate; gathering donated goods and cans from donors for foodbanks throughout North Canterbury.
Julie Graham, Cheviot Bayleys Real Estate agent, on behalf of Community Wellbeing North Canterbury Trust has delivered a boot load of cans to Council.
The delivery was greatly appreciated by Mayor Marie Black, and Rhea Duffy and Roger Hornblow from the HDC Community Team, and of course the foodbanks.
