A planned response for a stormy weekend
The Hurunui District Council was well prepared for the forecast Canterbury-wide storm described as a 100 year weather event last weekend.
Record rainfall was forecast well ahead of the weekend, so the council deployed its water and roading teams in a planned response to avert the worst effects of the deluge.
Flooding caused by the storm event led to a continually evolving picture of road and bridge closures, water supplies being shut down, rock falls and surface flooding across the district.
Mayor Marie Black said she was very proud of the way the teams responded, in the face of this extraordinary weather event.
She was pleased that the work that was carried out played a large part in keeping our community safe.
“It’s great to see the sun shining today, and my thoughts are particularly with our rural communities and the farmers who have to deal with a rapid transition from drought conditions to sodden paddocks.”
The council teams are working on infrastructural recovery which will keep them busy over the next few weeks.
