Wishes in Waikari have been answered
The Waikari community has been after a new bathroom block at the campground for several years, as the current building is showing its age.
Last week a CEBUS (Canterbury Education Board Unit System) building was moved from Hurunui College to Waikari Domain where the campground is.
The building, which has until now been used as a Junior School classroom, stands at 30 metres by 6 metres, and is currently on temporary piles until the next stage of replacement begins and a decision is made on the permanent placing and what will happen with the current facility.
The intention for the new building is to provide showers, toilets, kitchen, laundry and a recreation and lounge area.
Mayor Marie Black said it has been a long standing project under the direction of community champion Mel Ruck and the Waikari Advisory Committee.
The Committee has explored a variety of options to replace the existing block building that historically was the home of the United Rugby Club.
“Once renovations are complete, this prefab building will be a wonderful community asset for visitors, campers and locals. It is always exciting to see community vision come to fruition,” she said.
Works to fit it out and gain compliance will take place over the next few months
The Ministry of Education and the construction company Contract Construction supplied the building at no cost, and Laing Properties moved it for a very friendly price.
