Tsunami awareness could save your life
Knowing the natural warning signs of a tsunami and how to react could save your life, Hurunui Council’s Emergency Management Officer Allan Grigg says.
“Local source tsunamis can arrive within minutes – there won’t be time for an official warning. That’s why it’s so important for everyone to be able to recognise the natural warning signs of a tsunami and know how to react,” says Grigg.
“If you’re near the coast and experience an earthquake that is long or strong – you need to ‘get gone’.”
Grigg says it’s not only beach communities who need to be aware of the signs. “Tsunamis can occur at any time when you are enjoying the beach, whether you’re in the water or on shore. If you feel an earthquake that is strong enough to make it hard to stand up, or if it lasts longer than a minute, you need to move to the nearest high ground.”
Other natural warning signs could include unusual activity or currents in the sea.
It’s important, says Grigg, not to wait for an official tsunami warning in these conditions. “You need to leave immediately.”
“Households should consider incorporating tsunami planning into their household emergency plan, thinking about any special requirements, such as infants, the elderly, pets, or household members with medical requirements.”
