Hurunui Council thanks community for 454 submissions
Hurunui councillors are thrilled with the community’s participation in five different consultations held over two months.
454 submissions were received during the ‘We’re Here to Listen’ consultation, which included the Long Term Plan 2024-34, Review of the Reserves Management Plan, Representation Review, Fees and Charges, and feedback on the South Ward Spatial Plan.
Hurunui District Mayor Marie Black hailed the outcome as the “success of a new, community-led approach”.
“It’s the first time we’ve gone out to our communities on five different and equally important proposals over a sustained period,” says Mayor Black. “We knew we needed to try a different approach to ensure all members of our communities were given opportunities to participate.”
Hurunui councillors took the conversation out into their communities, engaging with community organisations, faith-based communities, sporting clubs, residents’ groups, charitable organisations and special interest groups throughout the district. The Amberley Farmers’ Market and Hanmer Springs Village Market also provided great places for engagement, Mayor Black said.
“It’s important our communities get involved in local government decision-making so that Council’s decisions and actions align with the community’s. Our councillors worked really hard to ensure all were given that opportunity.”
