Hazardous Waste
Hurunui Council encourages the safe disposal of household hazardous substances.
- Do not mix hazardous waste with normal rubbish.
- Do not pour hazardous wastes down the sink, drain or on the ground.
- Always read the disposal instructions provided.

What should I remember when taking hazardous wastes to the transfer stations?
When transporting hazardous waste, always remember the following.
- Tape small battery terminals and the top and bottom faces of button cell batteries.
- Label containers to identify the contents and ensure they are secure.
- Transport containers securely upright to prevent tipping.
- Let the staff know on arrival if you have hazardous waste; at Amberley and Hanmer Springs, notify the weighbridge staff.
What types of hazardous waste are not accepted at Hurunui transfer stations?
- Asbestos - for information regarding how to identify and dispose of asbestos safely, visit Asbestos Aware. Asbestos can be taken to EcoDrop in Bromley, call 03 941 7513.
- Waste fuel, antifreeze, paint thinners, commercial and agricultural hazardous waste; contact a specialist company such as Agrecovery or EnviroNZ.
- Larger volumes including 44 gallon drums of chemicals; contact a specialist such as EnviroNZ
- Medicines and needles; contact your local pharmacy for advice..
- Ammunition, fireworks, explosives and flares; contact the Police Arms Office for advice.
