Noise Control

We operate a 24 hour noise complaint response service. To lodge a noise complaint please phone the Council on 03 314 8816.

Noise is dealt with under the Resource Management Act 1991. The Act is designed to protect people from excessive or unreasonable noise. It applies to noise under human control, such as:

• Stereos and musical instruments
• Machinery
• Noise from people or groups of people

Everyone is responsible for ensuring noise caused on their property does not create a nuisance for any other person.

If an enforcement officer considers noise to be excessive they may direct the person making the noise to reduce it to a reasonable level. This direction can be verbal or in writing.

If a direction to reduce noise is not complied with, an enforcement officer may take any of the following actions in relation to equipment making the noise:

• Seize it and remove it from the place
• Render it inoperable by the removal of any part from it
• Lock it or seal it to make it unusable

In addition, a person who fails to comply with a direction to reduce noise may be issued with an infringement notice (i.e. fine).

Noise problems can often be avoided by being a good neighbour and being mindful of the impact of your activities on your neighbours.
