Build value up in Hurunui

Hurunui residents have been spending more money on houses than expected during the past 12 months.

Build value in Hurunui is slightly up compared to this time 12 months ago, despite the predicted drop due to COVID-19.

Kerry Walsh, Property and Building Manager for Hurunui District Council, said a major factor considered for this trend was people being at home during lockdown and noticing work that needed doing.

“Possibly using money which was earmarked for overseas travel, for those long wished-for renovation projects.”

New builds have also played a part, caused by people returning to New Zealand because of the virus, and needing a place to live.

Building hot spots have been Amberley and Hanmer Springs.

“Both Amberley and Hanmer are appealing places to live, to either commute to Christchurch via the new motorway, or holiday or live in one of New Zealand’s most scenic locations.”

Inspection requests in the Hanmer Springs region have increased by 20%, which means building inspectors are often travelling for full days in Hanmer, up to four times per week.

“2021 situation looks like a promising year, similar to 2020.”
