Trade Waste
What is Trade Waste
Trade Waste is the discharge of non-domestic liquid waste into the sewer system. Examples are waste from industrial workshops, hair salons or food businesses.
Requirements
All waste discharged into the Council’s wastewater network must meet certain requirements relating to its fat, grease and oil content, chemical makeup, and temperature. These requirements are detailed in Section 5 of the Three Waters Bylaw.
Approvals
All businesses that discharge trade waste into the wastewater network must apply to the Hurunui District Council for an approval. There is a trade waste application fee, please find a link to the fees and charges below
Approval can only be granted for discharges that meet the requirements in the bylaw. This means that businesses may need to install systems or devices to treat their trade waste before it is discharging into the wastewater network.
Costs involved in installing treatment devices or modifying any connection to enable monitoring by a Trade Waste Officer are at the business owner’s expense.
Grease Traps
Any premises which discharges grease or fats must have a grease trap to ensure this grease does not enter the wastewater network.
There is a requirement that a maintenance contract be entered into with a service provider to ensure the grease trap remains fit for purpose.
The specification, sizing, and servicing of the grease trap will be conditions of the trade waste approval.
Monitoring
All trade waste approvals will need ongoing monitoring.
Industrial premises must have their discharge sampled regularly for compliance.
Inspections for grease traps are undertaken.
Activities that require separation methods for wastewater and stormwater before discharge to the public wastewater and stormwater systems are also monitored.
Fees and Charges
Costs involved in installing treatment devices or modifying any connection to enable monitoring by a Trade Waste Officer are at the business owner’s expense.
