A good flow for Three Waters projects
It has been a busy and productive twelve months for Hurunui District Council with a big focus on Three Waters infrastructure and assets.
During the last financial year which finished on June 30 2021, a number of projects across the District were completed to upgrade or build new drinking water, storm water and wastewater services.
From laying 50km of new drinking water pipes across high country areas, to installing new reservoir tanks for drinking water, to putting in new sewer chamber security gates at treatment plants to reduce safety concerns, Chief Operations Officer at HDC Dan Harris said there is continually a large focus on delivering safe and efficient Three Waters services.
“It’s been fantastic to see this work unfolding. We’ve got hard working teams including local contractors, and that’s great for local employment.”
For the financial year which has just begun, a number of Three Waters projects are being planned for, while some are currently underway or nearly finished.
An upgraded drinking water network project has just begun in Markham St in Amberley, and new drinking water pipes are in the midst of being laid in Chalet Crescent, Hanmer Springs.
“As a local Council, we have always been dedicated to delivering quality Three Waters services to everyone in the district and our recently approved Long Term Plan ensures that this will continue into the future.”
Three Waters projects completed during FY 2020-2021
Ashley Forestry - A new 135,000L reservoir installed to increase storage capacity, the old concrete tank was 100,000L .
Mount Grey Rd to Smarts Road - A Watermain upgrade, where 7km of new watermain was installed to improve reliability and cater for future demand.
Kaiwara Booster – Improvements made here, including the installation of more reservoirs which will increase the storage capacity of this scheme.
Parnassus Booster PS Upgrade and Reservoir Security Work – The existing concrete tanks at the Parnassus booster were in poor condition, so were demolished and replaced with new reservoirs and fencing to enhance site security.
District Flow Metres – Installation of new flow meters at the Dillon and Rogerson intakes were installed to improve monitoring,
Browns to Reeces Rd Watermain replacement – A new 3km watermain installation between Browns Road and Reeces Road.
Blythe Intake Flood Protection Access – A large diameter culvert and drainage works have been installed on the access road to the Blythe intake, to increase resilience and improve accessibility in larger rainfall events.
Port Robinson Pipe Upgrade – 2.5km of new watermain installed to replace existing aged infrastructure.
Leithfield Outfall Drain - Shortening of the Leithfield stormwater drain structure by 15 metres to reduce damage to the piers at the front of the structure which has sustained damage from continued tidal forces.
Tarndale Place Stormwater improvements – A new 300m length of stormwater main and structures have been installed opposite SH7A from Tarndale Place to mitigate flooding on the neighbouring properties.
Rippingale Road Stormwater improvements – To mitigate flooding on Rippingale Road and Devon Street, a new stormwater main has been constructed which runs through the Reserve between both streets.
District Wide – The enlargement of 600m of existing stormwater drains to allow for more flow, which will mitigate conditions in a 1 in 100 year large flood event .
Chalet Crescent Stormwater Improvements – To mitigate localised areas of flooding around Number 39 Chalet Crescent, a new stormwater main was constructed which connects into the stormwater network which was installed at the beginning of 2020.
John Leith Place Sewer Joint Replacement - Repairs to wastewater main junctions and manholes have been undertaken.
Sewer Chamber Control Gate replacements – This is a barrier system, which has been completed at five wastewater treatment plants. The improvements have been made to increase the safety for operatives using these infrastructures.
District wide Wastewater flow metres – Installation of flowmeters at Motunau and Greta Valley wastewater treatment plants to improve data quality.
Amberley Eastern Wastewater pipe replacement – A length of 2.4km of new wastewater main from Teviotview Place to Hursley Terrace, and the installation of the new main which is of a larger diameter to increase the capacity in the township’s wastewater to cater for future development.
Hanmer Wastewater Disposal project – the construction of the new wastewater treatment disposal to land system, which pumps the treated wastewater from the existing wastewater ponds to the council-owned pine plantation which will be discharged to land. These works involved the construction of a new pump station at the existing treatment plant, to pump the wastewater through a new 5.8km long pressure main to the irrigation site where the wastewater is discharged over the 48ha pine plantation. The irrigation area is divided into four blocks which are irrigated in rotation, by way of mounted sprinklers.
