A warm welcome to our newest Councillor

It was the first day in Chambers today for the new West-Ward Councillor, Karen Armstrong.

Waikari has been home to Karen Armstrong for the past 17 years, and she says it’s the friendly people, wide open spaces and amazing opportunities to participate in her local community which has kept her there.

Born and raised on a sheep farm in Waihaorunga, “a little district inland from Waimate in South Canterbury,” and a current member of the Hurunui Community Committee, Karen knows well the importance of rural communities and ensuring its members are both looked after and able to flourish.

“For us in Waikari, there is such pride taken by local residents for our local community. And for some people who perhaps have relocated post Canterbury earthquakes, they’ve really taken to living in the Hurunui District, shifting away from the adversity of the earthquakes in the city and choosing to stay on and enjoy the wide open spaces and peace and quiet of living here.”

Karen has recently sold her interest in a business in Culverden, which has freed her up to take on both the challenges and opportunities offered with her new role as West-Ward Councillor for Hurunui District Council.

“I feel like I have a steep learning curve to get to grips with some of the big issues that are impacting the Hurunui District from Central Government, particularly for farmers. I am looking forward to learning more about those issues, so I can effectively represent the people of this District as a member of the well-established wider Council team.”

In her spare time, Karen enjoys spending time with friends and family, playing bridge, loves walking in the open spaces in Waikari, Hanmer Springs and Amberley Beach, and is looking forward to further exploring the wider District.

During Karen’s time living here, she has enjoyed seeing the enthusiasm residents have for the area, collectively enjoying the “hidden secret” of Hurunui.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my Community Committee role. I have worked a lot with two local Councillors who have both gone on to become Mayor, and have felt inspired by their energy, drive and commitment to serve the community. That is what has inspired me to run for Council.”

Mayor Marie Black is thrilled to have Karen on board.
