ROAD SAFETY STARTS YOUNG
Providing Hurunui school students the tools and motivation to form good habits around road safety was the theme for a day at Hurunui College last month.
The Road Safety Education Limited (RYDA) one day workshop was open to all Year 12 and 13 students from around the District, and was organised by Hurunui District Council Road Safety Coordinator Dean Eades.
Throughout the day, students took part in both practical exercises and classroom sessions looking at the factors that contribute to road crashes, and learned about how to make choices that enable them to be safe users of the roads.
“It was a highly engaging and memorable opportunity which front-loaded students’ understanding of road safety. They took home valuable skills which will play a part in them staying safe on our roads, as both drivers and passengers, throughout their lives," said Eades.
RYDA Programme Director Naomh Cusin said it was great to get the opportunity to work with students from the Hurunui area, who were all very engaged throughout the day.
"We hope they left the RYDA Programme feeling empowered to use the skills and strategies they learnt, to make improved decisions on the road and in life. This all makes a significant impact towards better outcomes for young people and the community," she said.
About RYDA: ‘A partnership which supports teachers on the journey as they provide their students with the tools and understanding they need to see themselves as active, responsible road citizens. Taking, largely, a student inquiry learning approach, RYDA becomes part of the school culture from the first to last day of a young person’s high school life. Beyond that, RYDA provides students with the tools, habits and motivation to take action and stay safe on our roads as both drivers and passengers throughout their lives… RYDA is delivered to over 660 high schools throughout Australia and New Zealand, with an average of 40,000 students participating in the RYDA Program every year….’ To read more, visit https://www.rse.org.nz/about-ryda/
