A second chance for pre loved clothes
The Council clothing bins are looking full, thanks to a great community response to Textile Month.
As part of the Council’s Waste Education Team's textile month in June, there temporary bins at Cheviot and Hanmer Service Centre's as a drop off point for all of your pre loved clothes to be repurposed.
Did you know that textiles create around 30% of greenhouse emissions in landfill, when they only take up 5%?
HDC’s Waste Educator Serina Linton said if your clothes need a hem tuck, a button or a stitch or two, it’s no reason to discard them.
“Textiles Month is about creating opportunities to repair, reuse or repurpose pre loved clothing,” she said.
Items will be collected and taken back to the Amberley Office where staff from the Textile Recycling Company in Christchurch will pick them up, along with items already in the permanent bins at Amberley Transfer Station.
Some funds raised from the clothing items will go towards the Child Cancer Foundation.
