Full time MTFJ placements on Kereone Farm

Two Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) youth are getting a taste for farming life after being placed full-time on Kereone Farm at Mouse Point.

Last month, Ben Tamatea and Laura Clyma were hired by farm owner John Faulkner to assist him with his biodiversity project.

John envisions bringing cultural and environmental aspects into the farming mix, subsequently coming up with the concept of restoring the Twin Bridges to the Waiau Township using his farm as a central point.

Over the past year, John has had multiple MTFJ youths working the Farm, planting over 72 rare and unique plant species, with another 1000 plants to be planted this season.

“It has done wonders for my mental health. It’s awesome to be working on something beneficial for the environment, and the regular pay cheques are great,” said Laura.

Along with planting, weeding, and tying trees, Ben and Laura have been learning the ropes of dairy farming.

“It is all pretty new to me, but it is really rewarding putting in a hard day’s work,” said Ben.

John is happy to have the extra set of hands.

“They are making great progress not only on the restoration project, but also on the dairy farm. I am really enjoying my time with Ben and Laura.”
