Making time for the tracks and trails
Tracks and trails form a significant reason why Hurunui District is a great place to live and holiday.
Promoting and enabling small local groups or individuals around the District to develop and maintain them, is the primary role of the Hurunui Trails Trust.
The Trust’s members are seeking new faces and ideas, due to a handful of vacancies around the table.
Trustee Mary Holloway said the Trust is the champion promoter and implementer of Hurunui District Council’s Walking and Cycling Strategy, seeking not only to develop a well-maintained network of tracks and trails for walkers, cycles, horses and some fully- accessible trails, but it also aims to develop routes that can be used throughout the District to link communities and avoid State Highways.
“The Trails Trust’s role is to provide a source of funding, resources and expertise, enabling smaller groups to do what they need to do for their own trail development, maintenance and visions,” she said.
The Trust, which also manages Hurunui’s St James Cycle Trail- one of New Zealand’s Great Rides, is looking for Trustees with a wide range of skills, - most importantly resourceful enthusiastic people who may come from all over the District.
“It’s about having trustees who can see the vision of a network of trails that embrace the wonderfully diverse environment that is the Hurunui,” said Mary.
Expertise in one specific area is not particularly necessary, just a willingness to work with the group and others in your community.
