Spring into good driving habits
Spring; a favourite part of the year for many is also an unpredictable season which can lend itself to challenging driving conditions.
Hurunui District Council’s Road Safety Coordinator Dean Eades said warm weather aids vegetation growth which reduces visibility in some areas, so encourages drivers and riders to carefully consider actions and timings around common practice driving habits, like their following distances.
“Spring is also a time of the year when farmers graze the road verge, so lookout for grazing stock on your travels,” said Eades.
All road users are encouraged to plan ahead when the roads are full of towing vehicles, like the approaching Labour Weekend.
“Plan your breaks. A refreshed driver is a safe driver.”
Look for Driver Reviver facilities in the rest area north of the State Highway 1 bridge, which will be running on Monday October 24th, (Labour Monday).
“If you are passing by, please stop and have a break, grab something to eat and drink before continuing on your journey.”
Top Tips for Spring Driving:
- Be seen, be safe – with changeable light levels, you are safer to travel with your driving lights (not just the park lights) on, night AND day.
- Have clear visibility through your windscreen and side windows. Use your indicators, your mirrors and look around before moving.
- Slow down for unclear conditions.
- Be aware of increased potholes after the incredibly wet winter.
- Drive phone-free.
