Hurunui College youngsters keeping engaged in the community
A programme focused on life skills is keeping Hurunui College students engaged and proactive within the community.
Kia Pakari, meaning ‘strong and sturdy’ is a programme that involves a group of year nine and ten students engaging in physical activity, well being lectures, and developing strong communication skills.
Students are also encouraged to suggest community-based projects, their most recent being a beach clean up at Ashworth’s, Amberley and Leithfield Beaches.
Course Leader Lee Copplestone said that these projects are about character building and learning to become good members of society.
“It was great to have them do a project focused on the impact our actions can have on the environment.”
Hurunui District Council’s Business Connector Chris King was nearby with a trailer for the rubbish collected and to lend a hand.
“It is always good to see local young people coming up with great ideas and getting stuck into it,” he said.
