A confident bright future thanks to the Tuia Programme
Young North Canterbury man Jamie McMahon has recently graduated from the Tuia Programme, which supports young Māori in leadership.
In May this year as part of this nationwide Programme, Jamie attended his first Wananga at Mangatoatoa Marae in the Waikato, which involved two days learning about the marae, Māori culture, past traditions and anthems, and connecting with likeminded rangatahi.
Prior to attending, the experience seemed somewhat daunting to Jamie, but once he was there amongst fellow rangatahi he thrived.
Supported by the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ), the Programme has involved Mayor Marie Black mentoring Jamie for 12 months to support him in his cultural, personal and leadership development.
Highlights for Jamie have included connecting and meeting other rangatahi, learning and understanding the kaupapa (purpose of the programme), reconnecting with his Māori identity, and the support received by Mayor Marie Black as he embarked on his cultural journey.
“I have really enjoyed learning about my culture and myself.”
Jamie works at KFC in Rangiora, which he really enjoys and says the confidence he has gained through Tuia Programme has helped him succeed in his job.
He hopes to work towards a manager’s role, and from there just see what happens.
Jamie is looking forward to some holiday time over summer which he will enjoy with family, friends and music.
Mayor Marie Black has reaped as much enjoyment and satisfaction from the Programme as Jamie, watching his confidence develop as he realised his potential.
"It was an absolute pleasure mentoring Jamie, we have both developed new skills over the past 12 months, and I have full confidence that he will embark on a bright and exciting future."
