Wanting to work, just like everyone else
It was great weather last week as Jessica McClintock marked her new venture with the Mayor's Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) programme at Hurunui District Council (HDC). The North Canterbury youth spent her first day with HDC's Business Connector Chris King, packing food boxes at Waipara Food Bank, and delivering fliers at Motunau Beach settlement. Jessica's mother Jenny said the one-on-one support is invaluable, and Jessica also loves to be part of a team, to have a say in discussions and to have a lot of fun while she is working.
"We feel there is a big gap in communities nationwide, where a lot of special needs adults want to work but there are no jobs for them."
As a family they are looking forward to being part of the additional learning the government funded Programme offers.
"Small steps with the Programme will hopefully mean it will gain momentum all around New Zealand."
Jenny and her husband Rod are hoping Jessica will be able to move on to a job that allows flexibility and more hours as she moves into the work force, with the opportunity to up-skill and gain self-worth which will be invaluable.
They feel confident that while Jessica is on the Programme she will meet new friends, be able to gain more knowledge and have the confidence to advocate for other communities to be part of it.
"We would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris King and MTFJ Programme Coordinator Prue Roberts for making us all feel part of the family as we learn more about the Programme, allowing Jessica to reach for the stars."
She said it suits Jessica as the hours are short and run over a few days. This allows her to build stamina for longer hours, learn new skills and have a purpose in life.
Chris King said it was great to see Jessica really begin to connect with people in the community, especially enjoying the company of Renee Parker who she worked alongside at the Waipara Food Bank.
"Jessica is so eager to learn, and I can tell that with her positive attitude she will get a lot out of working in the District and being part of MTFJ.
Jenny said Jessica loves to help people and just wants to work, like everyone else does.
"Finding the right person to take her under their wing and nurture her will be what she needs in life, and from there she will be ready for success."
