Telling Our Stories looks at our community's success stories and winds them back to see how the journey started.
Hurunui's brightly coloured Community Hub trailer takes any event to the next level.
It's used for youth-organised events, Council and community events, such as fireworks evenings, and it can also be hired out by community groups for a minimal fee.
We're proud of it and love to see it out and about Hurunui, bringing people together.
How it started:
In 2021, The Collaborative Trust - an advocacy programme that supports organisations and people who support or work with young people - identified in a report the need for a wellbeing hub to support Hurunui young people.
With our rural demographic spread out across the Hurunui, we knew a physical location would never work because what's the use of a community hub that people can't get to?
We put our heads together with our community and came up with a bright idea.
If the people can't come to the hub, the hub can come to the people.
Council applied to the Lotteries Community Fund to build a custom trailer that would be fitted out with equipment and which would be a transportable wellbeing hub for all of the community.
Along the way...
We faced some major challenges, including Covid supply issues, increased costs and general delays, as well as the Covid traffic light system, which delayed our being able to take the trailer to schools.
Success!
The hub's first real test was this year's Kia Ora Summer Pool Parties, travelling to 11 locations around the district.
Staff were able to load everything needed ... BBQ, tables, chilly bins loaded with sausages, gazebo, cooking utensils, games, water containers and a speaker system. We knew everything would be in the right place for the next party.
We are thrilled that the Community Hub can be used across our community throughout the year and can be used by anyone running events in our community.
