Recycling - Do it once, do it properly
The recycling system at Greta Valley Tavern is a swift one, and it’s all about doing your bit to make the next person’s job easier.
Glass, cardboard, cans and plastic containers are separated, and glass is divided into colours. Lids are collected and dropped off at Hurunui Memorial Library in Amberley where they’re used for local recycling projects.
An organic waste bucket is donated to a local farmer.
Scargill resident Annika Jablolonski has worked at the Tavern for more than a year, and a focus of hers since day one has been to streamline the recycling system and reduce waste.
Evidence of progress is clear during her weekly visits to Amberley Transfer Station, where staff there appreciate the hard work carried out by Tavern staff.
“I tell people ‘There is always someone behind you who has to do the job if you don’t,’” said Annika, explaining that the cleaner they can make the recycling, the easier it is at the other end of the process.
Annika used to regularly take four bins full of rubbish per week to Amberley Transfer Station, but this is now more regularly three.
“It’s an effort worth making.”
The Council’s Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan is currently open for public consultation, ‘From Waste to Wanted.’
