Telling Our Stories— Rotherham Hill Walkway
Telling Our Stories looks at our community's success stories and winds them back to see how the journey started.
The Rotherham Hill Walkway is appreciated by locals and visitors alike for its wonderful views. It’s also a fun way to exercise and catch up with friends and neighbours!
The walkway is one of three priority projects that were led by the community.
The walkway is accessed from Davidson Street and ends on Rotherham Rd N, and takes in some spectacular views across the town and surrounding hills.
How it started:
Paul and Mika Butler moved to Rotherham from England and purchased the historic Doctor’s House in Davidson Street in 2021. The property included a hill block with spectacular views over the village and surrounding hills. Paul and Mika, saw the potential to restore the hill walking track to be enjoyed by all the community and rolled up their sleeves.
Along the way...
The path was covered in broom and blackberry, and parts of it were very steep. Paul, Mika and the Rotherham community spent many hours working on the hill section but the track needed some steps to make it accessible to as wide a group as possible.
Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) staff came to the rescue with a small team of work experience young people, who reinforced and improved the track by adding about 30 steps in steep areas.
Success!
The path is user-friendly and has become a favourite with locals and school children. It was a major asset for Rotherham during the Covid-19 lockdown.
