Putting things into practice
Xander Acton-Adams is looking forward to summer, undertaking work experience on sheep and beef farms near Waipara and Lake Sumner.
From a family farm at Mt Grey, 20 year-old Acton Adams is nearing the end of his first year of a Diploma in Agriculture at Lincoln University, embracing a life of lecture halls and the Halls of Residence.
The former Christ’s College student encourages young people in the Hurunui District to do what he did in his final year of school - apply for Hurunui District Council’s Secondary School Achievers fund.
As a successful recipient, he received a grant that has helped him with the costs of his tuition and accommodation.
He’s thoroughly enjoying tertiary life.
“It’s going really well at the moment, and I’m looking forward to putting things into practice when I work on the farms this summer.”
The assistance of reader-writers in exams and note takers during lectures has made the youngster’s university experience an especially positive one, as he’s been able to get the most out of his tuition and study.
“The support team at Lincoln University has been really helpful.”
Acton Adams has enjoyed spending 2023 meeting new young people, who share the same interests.
After his two-year Diploma, he may get a job on-farm, or he may undertake further study in the forestry sector or animal science.
But for now, this budding farmer from the Hurunui District is looking forward to putting his Secondary School Achievers Fund to the best use, and reaping the benefits from a fun and interesting learning environment.
“The Secondary School Achievers Fund is worth trying to achieve, it’s a great thing to have available.”
In line with the Policy Hurunui - Our Place, Our People, the assessment panel is made up of Mayor Marie Black, Councillors Karen Armstrong and Vanessa McPherson, three independent members, a representative from Buddle Findlay, and a Youth Councillor.
Applications are open, and close on Monday October 9.
