A fresh start for Water Services Reform Programme
Communities 4 Local Democracy He hapori mō te Manapori (C4LD) welcomes the new National-led government and its vow to repeal the previous Labour government’s Water Services Reform Programme.
Hurunui District’s Mayor Marie Black looks forward to the new government repealing its waters legislation and replacing it with a new proposal based on community-ownership of water services.
She says there has been enough discussion and feedback from communities, councils, and the water sector.
“The time for decisive action is now, and we call on the incoming government to move swiftly, and stop more time and money being spent on the outgoing government’s reform.”
Mayor of Manawatu District Helen Worboys, and Mayor of Waimakariri District Dan Gordon, joint chairs of C4LD, state an alternative approach is ready, that can deliver better outcomes for its communities.
They agree C4LD is ready to work alongside and in partnership with the new government, to ensure this occurs as promptly as possible.
