Amberley business leads with green feet
An Amberley business is leading with green feet when it comes to recycling and waste minimisation, says Hurunui Council’s Waste and Compliance officer Nicole Hurinui.
Hurinui is a familiar face in the district’s business community, where she helps to connect business owners and operators to waste minimisation networks and advice.
“Council’s Waste team are always looking at great ways our community is reducing waste going to landfill, and we love to pass on these tips to our other businesses so we can all learn from each other. Our local businesses work hard to reduce waste and we’re here to support them.”
Arthur Burke Amberley has incorporated a range of planet-friendly actions into their everyday business practices, Hurinui says.
“From recycling tyres to repurposing scrap metal, they have it all in place.”
Arthur Burke Ltd General Manager Craig Schroder said the company is very conscious about limiting what is going to landfill. “The whole group is proactive around recycling, and we regularly share across the company recycling tips and ways that we might be doing things.”
Across the three arms of the Amberley business, the team has implemented a range of practices, including collecting waste oil from the workshop to be picked up and reused, collecting all scrap metal and tyres to be recycled, draining oil filters to be picked up for scrap metal, collecting cardboard to be recycled, and storing batteries from the workshop for donation to the local Lions Club for fundraising.
“We also have a box set up in the garden area for people to drop off their used plastic plant pots so these can be reused by other customers or get recycled.”
Schroder said even the company’s board meetings were running paperless through the adoption of board governance software.
“We’re emailing out accounts rather than posting, with only a limited number still being posted, and we text warrant reminders now as well.”
Hurinui congratulated the company on the efforts they were making. “Wherever there’s a waste reduction scheme, they try to do the right thing.”
