Construction of the new post-earthquake pool in Waiau is turning heads as the project takes shape.
The new ‘Myrtha’ pool is unique in both its design and story of origin, with a lot of thought going in to making sure it will be around for another 100 years.
Member of the Waiau Pool Committee, Emma Duncan explains the pool has been made possible by a committee of volunteers who have worked endlessly for the past two years, determined to get everything over the line.
“The project has been hard work for this committee, extremely hard work, but just as rewarding at the same time. It is a huge achievement for a small community”.
Duncan also explains the project and fundraising have had a rare start.
“It all started when the previous caretaker of the old pool heard it had been damaged in the 2016 earthquake. His name is Verdon Kelliher. While he once lived in Waiau, he was living in Auckland when he heard about the damage and he launched a rebuild campaign for the small town from there”.
The new pool has been designed by Create Inc., constructed by Ian Coombes Ltd., and backed by council throughout its process.
Completion is expected in February and the Hurunui District Council and Waiau Pool Committee are thrilled to see such a special and well-deserved project coming together for Waiau.
The original pool was Ministry of Education owned, however the new pool is going to be council owned and community operated. The council’s Chief Executive Officer, Hamish Dobbie, says Waiau have lead the way.
“It’s very exciting to see the progress on this community driven facility. Whilst the council is technically the holder of this asset, the reality is that the people of Waiau have raised all the funds and overseen the construction of this pool. Waiau has really demonstrated the power of small communities.”
