Fire and Emergency Declares Prohibited Fire Season
The continuing hot and dry weather of late has led to Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) declaring a prohibited fire season as of midnight tonight (Wednesday 20 February).
All fires will be prohibited within the Hurunui, Waimakariri and Selwyn districts.
This means a total ban on lighting fires from this evening until further notice. It also means all fire permits issued during the former ‘restricted’ fire season will be suspended.
If you had a fire permit and/or were managing a fire during the restricted season, FENZ are reminding you to check it is still properly extinguished. Fires have been known to reignite up to a month after being put out.
You can check which types of fire are still alright, like gas BBQs, at www.checkitsalright.nz
