The opening ceremony for the Hurunui Heartland Cycle Ride will be at the Hurunui Hotel on the 13th of April, at 2pm.
The Hurunui Trails Trust, in partnership with the New Zealand Cycle Trail, have released an open invitation for all to come and celebrate the cycle ride’s grand opening.
The invitation also encourages those who love a bit of pedal power to follow the routes signs and ride to the event.
The Hurunui Heartland Cycle Ride is an on-road cycle route going all the way from Leithfield and Amberley, through our heartland countryside, to Kaikoura. It is designed to link some of our rural communities for cyclists and to provide them with a safe and scenic route through the district. It will also be the foundation leg of what will ultimately be a route going all the way from Cathedral Square the top of the South Island.
The cycle ride is a product of the Hurunui Trails trust, endorsed by NZTA and has received ongoing support from council throughout its design and installation.
Mayor Winton Dalley said he is very much looking forward to the event. “This opening will be a time to celebrate. A time to recognise a wonderful vision, delivered through the determination and stamina of dedicated enthusiasts” he said. “This heartland ride is an asset to our district, a challenge for locals and visitors alike. It is a great opportunity to build fitness while enjoying the stunning vistas of the Hurunui”.
Mark Inglis, Mountaineer, Researcher, Paralympian and Motivational Speaker, was appointed the Trails Coordinator for the Hurunui Trails Trust. He has been overseeing the Hurunui Heartland Cycle Ride through to its grand opening. “It’s been a privilege working with the team that had the concept to get cyclists from Christchurch to Kaikoura in, not just a safe way but, a way that connects with our great communities” he said. “The opening on April the 13th is just the start of a great journey, not just for cyclists, but for all of the communities along the route.”
