NCTIR Work Notice: Inland Road, Route 70
After the November 2016 earthquake, the emergency repairs enabled the Inland Road to be opened quickly and access restored to Kaikoura.
What we are Doing Now
In June 2019, NCTIR will be starting permanent repairs on the Inland Road bringing it back to pre-earthquake standard. This work will take about twelve months. We will have three separate crews working on the 20 projects, which include bridges, culverts and retaining walls, see map on page 2.
Bridges
We will be building a new reinforced concrete bridge over the Wandle River to replace the temporary Bailey bridge. This will be located just east of the existing bridge. Six other bridges (see map on page 2) will have repairs to the abutments, beams, piers, shear keys, expansion joints, piles and approaches depending on the level of damage. This is major structural work and will take between three and ten months to complete on each bridge. At a number of bridges we will construct a dry ford for traffic diversion (Lower Mason, Lottery, Kahatara, Upper Mason and Charwell).
Lulus Hairpin Bend
The road at Lulus bend will be realigned. This involves earthworks to raise the road above the river level, up to 1.8 metres in some sections. In constructing this there will be five culverts installed and along the side of this section of the Mason River a rock armour protection (rip-rap) will be installed.
Culvert and Small Bridge Work
Many culverts and bridges have some minor damage, mainly cracking in the concrete structures. These repairs will take between one and four months to complete.
Retaining Walls
Between the Conway River and the Upper Mason Bridge there are six slip locations where we will be building retaining walls using gabion baskets. Each of these will take two to four months.
Other Work Sites
While we are working, Downer will also be doing some maintenance work on the Inland Road.
How this work may affect you:
We will keep the road open. At each worksite, the road will be one-way with “Stop/Go” or traffic lights
There will be one or two short “stop/stops” (road closure) for up to 10 minutes at Cribb Creek
Work will generally take place between 7am and 5pm Monday to Friday with some occasional weekend work
Expect delays and allow extra travel time
