This month the Government’s Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme started offering grants for heaters (efficient heat pumps, wood burners and pellet burners) to low income homes.
The Warmer Kiwi Homes is a four-year Government programme offering grants covering two-thirds of the cost of an efficient wood burner, pellet burner or heat pump (capped at $2,500), as well as ceiling and underfloor insulation, to low income, owner occupied homes.
This is part of an initiative to improve the quality of New Zealand’s housing stock and the health of our people. The grants for insulation have been on offer since July last year, so the grants for heating that became available this month are the logical next step.
Both grants cover two‐thirds of the cost of installing insulation or approved heaters - but for the heaters, grants will be capped at a maximum of $2,500.
You are eligible for a grant if you are the homeowner (not a Landlord) and the:
- home was built before the year 2008
- homeowner has a Community Services Card or SuperGold combo card, OR
- home is in an area identified as low‐income
- home doesn’t have an existing operational efficient heating appliance in the main living area
- homeowner permanently occupies the home.
To be eligible for heater grant, your home must have existing ceiling and underfloor insulation that is up to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority’s (EECA) standards. You may also be eligible if a service provider contracted to EECA has assessed the home and found they can’t install insulation.
