Nominations open today for local government elections.
The Hurunui District Council is holding candidate information meetings in the three ‘new’ wards and the Hanmer Springs Community Board area to help anyone considering standing for office.
Running from 4pm - 6pm, these sessions will by drop-in format with potential candidates able to pop in and have their questions answered. Some sitting councillors will also be available to tell of their experiences and provide first hand knowledge.
Monday 22 July, 4pm – 6pm
Tuesday 23 July, 4pm – 6pm
Wednesday 24 July, 4pm – 6pm

Nominations close at noon on August 16.
Council deputy electoral officer Naomi Woodham said the public could also keep track of nominations as they were lodged through a link on the the council’s website here
Hurunui voters will be asked to elect:
- One mayor.
- Two East ward councillors.
- Four South ward councillors.
- Four West ward councillors.
- ★ Five Ahuriri Community Board members.
- ★ Five Waihemo Community Board members.
- Six Cheviot Licensing Trust members.
- Two Environment Canterbury regional councillors.
- Seven Canterbury District Health Board members.
Where you live determines which ward you are in and therefore which ballots you can participate in.
Voter packs will be mailed to registered voters from September 20 – the day postal voting opens.
All the elections use the First Past the Post (FPP) system except the health board, which uses the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system.
Votes must be received by the council by noon on October 12.
Official results will be released as soon as possible after that.
