Residents can now build a picture of where they would like to see changes on their local roads using an interactive map.
The new interactive map is part of a community driven road safety project called ‘1600k: Getting there Together…’. The Hurunui district has a roading network of over 1600 kilometres! Through the map, council plans to stay familiar with community experiences on that network and on top of any concerns.
In 2018 a Road Safety in Canterbury research survey revealed that 81% of Hurunui residents agree that road users can help prevent serious crashes and 99% agree that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Roading Manager Kushla Tapper said the council are on a mission to keep improving the safety and enjoyment of people using the Hurunui network. “We would like to hear from everyone” she said. “We want to know about people’s experience on our network, about any places where people feel unsafe, and if the signed speeds seem appropriate to our road users”
Council officers will receive reports generated from the map and use this to inform and support future work programs. The intent of collecting this data is for longer-term projects and in this way community feedback will make a real difference in shaping local roads and improving safety.
Road Safety Co-ordinator Krystal Jennings said “We all have a part to play - starting conversations within your family and social networks regarding road safety and sharing your experiences out on the roads is really important. We look forward to hearing from residents, helping to build a broad picture of safety concerns on our network”.
The Community Team will hit the road later this month, consulting on 1600k around the district and seeking the first formal round of feedback. But the community will not have to wait, as everyone can start using the map to report their concerns and ideas from today.
The interactive map is quick and simple to use, allowing residents to drop pins on exact locations and/or reinforce other user’s comments.
More immediate concerns should continue to be reported via the Snap Send Solve app - so council can act promptly.
