Making the most of Magic Moss
A moss producing company in Amberley is reaping benefits from youth involved in the Mayoral Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ).
Youngster Jeffrey Chandler, 24, is currently working for Magic Moss, a locally run business selling moss to various clientele, whether it be for decorative use or gardening, planting, or it’s moisture benefits for water preservation.
It is owned and run by Allan Paterson, who is heavily involved in the entire process from the harvesting of moss to where it ends up, all carried out sustainably with the plant’s best interests at heart.
Earlier this year Allan was keen for more labour and heard about MTFJ through local business networking. He was put in touch with Chris King, Business Recovery Advisor at Hurunui District Council, who told him about the benefits of MTFJ; connecting local businesses with youth, to create sustainable opportunities for both parties.
“He put me in touch with Jeffrey, which was just great for us both.”
Jeffrey had previously been set up with seasonal work for MTFJ before the opportunity for long term work arose. He was willingly taken on by Allan as part of the Magic Moss team, ready to be shown the ropes of the business.
“He has been a part of all aspects of Magic Moss production, from breaking up the moss, to laying it and packing it.”
After being on board for just two weeks, Allan was happy to say that Jeffrey has already taken on the eight-wheeler amphibious vehicle along with other new tasks, which he used as an example to praise Jeffrey’s ‘give it a go’ attitude and determination.
“He is always doing his best, which is all you can ask”.
One of the goals of this working relationship was to make the experience beneficial, enjoyable and fun for the business and youth. Allan described his experience working with Jeffrey as all the above.
“He is fun, and fits very well into our team, and this isn’t something that is always easy to do.”
Jeffrey shared Allan’s enthusiasm, and has been very appreciative for the opportunity Allan and MTFJ has provided.
“I enjoy working for Allan, he is a cool boss... The MTFJ has been really beneficial for real world experience, it has been immensely valuable.”
