Topp Contracting providing top opportunities
Rotherham’s Topp Contracting is happy to have another set of hands thanks to the Mayoral Task Force for Jobs (MTFJ).
Hawarden local Quentin McDonnell, 37, is thoroughly enjoying the work provided by Topp Contracting. Owned and run by Geoff Topp, the labouring company offers a diverse amount of labour from harvesting, earthworks, and road works to cartage and supplying. Operating for more than 30 years, Geoff and his team have played a major part in moulding the Hurunui we see today.
Last month, Foreman Craig Austin inquired with a local council member about MTFJ; a Government funded programme connecting local businesses with those displaced by COVID19 to create sustainable opportunities for both parties.
Eager to get Topp Contracting onboard, Business Recovery Advisor at Hurunui District Council Chris King reached out to Craig, kickstarting the relationship between Quentin and the business.
“I was told about MTFJ through a council member and thought it was awesome, not long after I got the call from Chris.”
Since then, Craig has had Quentin working hard to get all things ‘labour’ down pat.
“He has been doing a bit of everything… shoveling, labouring, laying pipes and truck driving, which are all beneficial skills for the future.”
Impressed by Quentin’s work ethic, Craig is now keen to find more opportunities for Quentin, to grow within the industry, starting with an introduction to heavy machinery.
“He has been picking up skills well and seems to be enjoying it, especially the truck driving… won’t be long before he takes on the digger.”
Quentin is currently on a three-month contract, but with his positive attitude and quick learning, Craig sees no reason not to keep him on board.
“Judging by Quentin’s performance I can’t see why his contract won’t be extended.’’
Quentin’s enthusiasm while talking with Chris after his first day on the job suggested he will not hesitate to snatch up this opportunity.
“I had a great first day at work, loved every minute of it.”
The success of the MTFJ has been extremely valuable for those affected by COVID19, providing them opportunities to restart their careers while also supporting and benefitting the local businesses and the community.
“I think it is really awesome what you guys are doing, it’s a great way to keep locals in our communities,” says Craig.
