A magic start to the workforce
A moss growing business in the Hurunui District has provided a second local youth with work, thanks to its successful collaboration with Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ).
Sarah Allington, 20, from Waikari, was beginning to fear that job opportunities in the Hurunui District were out of her reach due to COVID-19, after a year of job searching had come to no fruition.
Through MTFJ she found work at Magic Moss, in Leithfield, which grows and sells moss for decorative use, gardening, planting, and its moisture benefits.
MTFJ is a Government funded programme connecting local businesses with those displaced by COVID-19, creating sustainable opportunities for both parties.
Sarah was referred to Hurunui District Council’s Business Recovery Advisor Joni Howe, through the Ministry of Social Development.
“It’s really hard out there when you’re rural and there’s less job opportunities, especially after the pandemic,” said Sarah.
The support of MTFJ reassured her it was possible to land a job close to home.
“I was so happy to be placed here… I like the variety of work in the job, and I have really good co-workers.”
Business owner, Allan Paterson is thrilled to be helping another youth find their feet in moss industry.
“Sarah has really embraced the job; she becomes more confident and independent the longer she is here. She has started taking things into her own hands and problem solving… It is really great to see these youth growing in their roles.”
Sarah said that she has noticed these changes in herself also, and credits MTFJ for helping her to get to this point.
“After not working for a year, MTFJ has helped me feel more independent. It has been really good for my mental health by having a job to go to.”
