Trust in the Taskforce
The Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) youth are successfully making their mark throughout the entire Hurunui District.
Taylor Cleaver, a 24-year-old Cheviot local was one of the first youth placed in employment through MTFJ at Cheviot Trust Hotel.
MTFJ is a Government-funded programme connecting local businesses with those displaced by COVID-19, creating sustainable opportunities for both parties.
Taylor was out of work for six months after moving back from Australia just before the COVID-19 lockdown.
“Once lockdown was lifted, I really struggled to find a job, especially here in Cheviot as so many places had closed down.”
Coming up a year employed at the Cheviot Trust Hotel, Taylor has earned her Duty Managers License and is looking forward to starting a mixology course in the next few months.
“I’ve always been interested in doing a mixology course, so I am really looking forward to gaining some new skills.”
Hotel Manager Trina Reid values the support of MTFJ and the opportunities she can give Taylor through the programme.
“The MTFJ funding has helped us keep Taylor in employment and allowed us to offer her courses that she may be interested in.”
Joel Manawatu, 35, is another MTFJ success story placed at the Hotel as a chef, who Trina also intends to upskill through available courses.
“Joel would like to do a butchery course to brush up on his skills…. the funding from MTFJ has been great for making these things happen,” she said.
Hurunui District Council’s Business Recovery Advisor Chris King enjoys keeping in touch with placements during their employment and providing ongoing support.
“They are committing to upskilling which we are proud of, it’s always nice to check in and see their progress.”
