A great match through MTFJ
“The whole experience with the Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) really helped me to land on my feet, I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
These are the appreciative words of Amberley local Dean Millar, who was placed in work at Elliot’s Nursery, Amberley three months ago through MTFJ.
MTFJ is a Government-funded programme connecting local businesses with those displaced by COVID-19, creating sustainable opportunities for both parties.
Dean was referred to Hurunui District Council’s (HDC) Business Recovery Advisors Joni Howe and Chris King through his art teacher, who heard about MTFJ through the local grapevine.
“I had a really good experience with Council, they are really friendly and supportive… it all happened so fast, before I knew it, I was employed.”
Dean has always had a keen interest in horticulture, so it is safe to say he had found his niche.
“I studied horticulture at Lincoln University. I’m really glad to have been placed in work I enjoy.”
Business owner Jeff Elliot said that Dean is thriving in his new working environment.
“Dean is lovely. He is so much more confident after settling into the job… it’s always a gamble taking on a new employee, but I’m happy with Dean, he is doing great.”
Chris is encouraging more people like Dean to look into the benefits of this worthwhile programme.
“The MTFJ team at HDC would love to hear from anyone who would like some direction regarding employment. We are keen to work alongside you, and to place you in sustainable work.”
If you are a local business or know a youth who would be interested in joining this venture, please contact Joni or Chris at HDC, 03 3148816 or email mtfj@hurunui.govt.nz
