Welcoming Communities Stocktake report launched
Students at Amuri Area School have added their voice to a plan being developed to ensure Hurunui is a welcoming community for its newcomers.
Hurunui Council Welcoming Communities Facilitator Natalie Paterson says the Welcoming Communities Stocktake report was launched last week at Amuri Area School with the findings of the survey that was undertaken last year.
“As a community, we’re looking at what we are doing well and what we could do better across eight outcomes over the next three to five years. These outcomes range from ensuring our newcomers feel welcome to participate in the civic life of our district to feeling comfortable in our public spaces and being provided with opportunities to learn about others’ cultures,” Paterson said.
"It was rewarding to hold the launch at the school as so many newcomers from Amuri gave us their thoughts and experiences through the survey, and we really appreciate that.”
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black says she is excited about the progress the district is making in the Welcoming Communities space. “This is adding to Hurunui’s rich tapestry of inclusion and diversity. We’re proud to be a Welcoming Community and to be working closely with our community on this important work.”
Paterson said the Welcoming Communities advisory group would gather the feedback received from the students at the launch into the plan that will serve all of Hurunui’s newcomers.
