Amberley Repair Café returns in May, thanks to community support
The overwhelming success of last year’s Amberley Repair Café has paved the way for its return in May.
May’s event will take place on Saturday 3 May from 1pm to 4pm at the Tin Shed, Amberley Domain. The repair café is a collaboration between Hurunui District Council and Mollie’s Place in Amberley.
Sylvia Bowles of Mollie’s Place says it’s been rewarding to see how the repair café keeps getting bigger. “Following an incredible turnout in November, where over 100 people from across North Canterbury supported the event, we’re thrilled to be bringing it back to the community. This is thanks to our North Canterbury community, which has embraced the initiative with enthusiasm.”
Council’s Waste educator Serina Linton says the event was started with a vision to divert recyclable items away from landfill and to instil a culture of fixing things rather than throwing them away. “Seeing the community take ownership of this movement has been truly inspiring.”
At the November event, nearly double the number of items were brought in for repair compared to the previous repair café held in June 2024.
“In total, 90 items were registered for repair, with a remarkable 74% being successfully fixed on the day. For those needing more work, repairs continued beyond the event, ensuring as many items as possible were given a second life,” Linton says.
“The way people have embraced the Repair Café is humbling,” Bowles says. “It’s not just about fixing things—it’s about sharing skills, building connections, and creating a sustainable future together.
“We’re so grateful to the many volunteers who put their hands up to share their expertise. Without their willingness to help, the Amberley Repair Café wouldn’t be the growing success it is today.”With such strong support from both volunteers and attendees, the event is on track to become a much-loved fixture in the district’s calendar.
“The community has shown that this is something they value, and we’re excited to see it continue to grow,” says Linton.
As the May 2025 event approaches, the organisers are calling for more volunteers to join the movement to help keep the momentum going. “If you have skills in fixing anything from electronics to clothing, or just want to lend a helping hand, we’d love to have you involved,” Linton says.
