Social Housing Accommodation

Social Housing

Council provides Council-owned social housing in order to provide a low-cost housing option for older persons or those with mobility, mental health or disability issues in particular those, who due to their personal circumstances, may be unable to afford housing at market rates, to allow them to stay living within the district.

Units are situated at:

5 Church Street Amberley - 4 double and 5 single
5 Pound Street Amberley - 1 double and 2 single
35 Princes Street, Waikari - 5 single
53 Conical Hill Road, Hanmer Springs - 4 single
4 Seddon Street, Cheviot - 4 single
5 Rolleston Street, Cheviot - 4 single
16 Buckley Street, Cheviot - 5 single

Priority criteria

Aged 65 years old and over, or

Adults who has been on the Supported Living Payment for 18 months or more, and unable to afford housing at market rates, or unable to easily access rental housing in their own right due to mobility, mental health or disability issues; and

- Can demonstrate a housing need; and

- Have total assets of no more than $25,000 (single) or $30,000 (couple); and

- Gross income (excluding Superannuation or Supported Living Payments) is not more than the equivalent of 15 hours per week at minimum wage; and

- Have a connection with the district.

Aged 60 years old and over; and

- Can demonstrate a housing need; and

- Have total assets of no more than $25,000 (single) or $30,000 (couple); and

- Gross income (excluding Superannuation or Supported Living Payments) is mot more than the equivalent of 15 hours per week at minimum wage; and

- Have a connection with the district.

As per Priority 1 or 2, but does not have a connection with the district

Amberley

Waiau Accommodation

The Council provides accommodation units in the Waiau Village to support families, couples and individuals with a housing need who wish to live and work in the Waiau area.

Applying for a Unit

Council may exercise discretion in letting vacant units where there are no applicants who meet the criteria exactly.

Letting Criteria and conditions

Units in the Waiau Village will be let to families, couples and individuals who have a proven housing need, and subject to the following criteria.

Priority

  1. Applicant requires temporary accommodation while their home is repaired or rebuilt.
  2. Applicant wishes to remain in Waiau due to family and/or work commitments or other justified reason and other private rental is either unsuitable or unavailable.
