Living Here
The Hurunui District is home to 13,700 (2022) people and nestled between the Pacific coastline and the snowcapped peaks of the Southern Alps.
Our District encompasses the outer bounds of the takiwā of Ngāi Tūāhuriri (centred at Tuahiwi) and Ngāti Kuri (centred at Takahanga) and the Hurunui and Waiau-Uwha Rivers were important routes for Ngāi Tahu whānui and their ancestors to Te Tai Poutini/The West Coast, while pa were located at the mouth of both the Waipara and Tutaeputaputa/Conway rivers.
North Canterbury’s first sheep and cattle farm was established by the Greenwood Brothers at Motunau in 1847, and dryland pastoral farming has formed the basis of land uses, settlements and communities that comprise the modern Hurunui District.
The district offers something for everyone, lifestyle opportunities in rural communities or bigger townships, hiking in the hills, hunting, or fishing, soaking in the hot pools in Hanmer Springs. Skiing in the winter or enjoying a nice dinner and wine tasting in one of the many vineyards.
North Canterbury boasts a range of schooling and educational support options for your children at all ages and stages of their learning journey.
Our main office is in Amberley, 35 minutes from Christchurch International Airport.
