How much could I receive?
The maximum rebate for the 2024/25 rating year is $790.
Where does the rebate come from?
This pool of money comes from the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) and is funded from taxes and paid against your rates.

How often do I need to apply?
You can apply for a rebate every rating year.

What do I need to provide with the application form?
Source of Income | Evidence required. |
Interest & Dividends | Bank or company tax certificates. |
Any payment from WINZ for the “full year” | No income evidence required. |
Any payment from WINZ for the a part year | Contact IRD for a Certificate of Earnings. |
Employment | Gross income for the tax year ended 31 March . Your employer or the IRD can provide this. |
Self Employed | Accounts for the year ended 31 March . Your accountant or tax agent can provide this – this must include a list of expenses claimed from IRD. |
You cannot apply for a rebate if:
- You were not living in the property you are claiming a rebate for on 1 July.
- You are not the legal ratepayer and do not appear on the rates roll.
- The property is a rental property.
- The property is used principally for farming, commercial, industrial or business purposes.
- Are assisting someone who is unable to attend and do not have a “Power of Attorney” document.
Family Trusts
These are more complex and you are best advised to telephone and discuss before you apply.

Retirement Villages
Most retirement village residents, including people who live under a ‘licence to occupy’ (LTO) agreement, can apply for a rates rebate.
With your rates rebate application, also complete the retirement village residents declaration form available on the Department of Internal Affairs website.
