Discounted Composting Kits

Hurunui Council has discounted food waste and pet waste composting kits available for sale from:

  • Amberley and Hanmer Springs transfer station weighbridge offices.
  • Amberley Council offices.
  • Via ordering at Amberley, Cheviot, Culverden and Hanmer Springs libraries for collection within a couple of days.

Food Waste Composting

Bokashi composting kits enable food waste to be recycled into a nutrient rich compost in under half the time of normal composting.

Made from effective microorganisms (EM), molasses and plant based materials, such as sawdust, rice bran or wheat bran, bokashi is a natural product and using a special airtight container, can be added to the following.

  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Left over prepared foods
  • Cooked or raw meat and fish
  • Egg shells
  • Small pieces of bones
  • Coffee grinds and tea bags

Pet Waste Composting

As pet waste should not be put in rubbish bags, Council encourages using Ensopet, an innovative in ground composting system, to compost dog, cat, rabbit and even guinea pig waste.

Micro-organisms ensure a rapid breakdown and due to this continuous cycle of composting, your composter may never fill. If it does, just move it to another location.

A composting kit includes a composter, a bag of EnsoPet Starter, tongs and instructions.
